About Project Glucose

A community-based initiative born from shared experience and a commitment to those who are underserved.

Why we started

Project Glucose is a community-based initiative founded in 2023 to increase efforts towards improving diabetes management in older, non-English speakers. It originated in the Tarzana community, and has since expanded to communities all over Southern California.

While our board members come from vastly different communities, we each witnessed the impact diabetes had on members of our community. With a 2023 study finding that 87% of Type II Diabetics do not use a CGM (continuous glucose monitor), we decided to design kits revolving around the traditional blood strip glucose monitor.

Our free kits include glucose monitors, lancets, blood strips, and sanitary wipes, with the key element being an instruction and diabetes management card customized for the many languages of each community. Distribution events, aimed at elder members of non-English-speaking communities, are held every six months. Our hope is that Project Glucose will have a positive impact on those who are overlooked and underserved.
